Mother Lode Friends of Music presents their first concert of the 2018-2019 season, ”Autumn Romance,” on Sunday, September 30, 2018, 3:00 pm at the Sutter Creek Theatre, Main Street, Sutter Creek.
The program will feature chamber music from the early 20th century. Works include the sensuous song cycle "Chansons Madécasses" by Maurice Ravel, and the extraordinary "Trio in C Major, Opus 29" by Croatian composer Dora Pejačević.
Featured performers include the brilliant Biljana Bojović on cello, and the Mother Lode Friends of Music (MLFM) debut of mezzo-soprano, Karen Lyman. Returning MLFM performers are Corina Stoian, violin; Ron Brickman, piano; and Sandra Betti, flute.
“These works are quite exotic and romantic,” says MLFM Artistic Director Sandra Betti. “Both composers were inspired by indigenous music and folk tunes for these compositions. Pejačević is Croatian, and that influence is strong in her Trio in C Major. Ravel is a well-known French composer, but this particular work uses sounds and poetry from Madagascar.”
Mezzo-soprano Karen Lyman performs with professional opera companies and orchestras; most recently in Handel's Messiahwith the Solano Chamber Orchestra and the role of Jack in Nevada Opera's production of Jack and the Beanstalk. She lives in Sutter Creek with her husband and three boys.
