C&T Publishing has recently released Modern Scot Patchwork by Kathy Allen. In her book, Kathy takes seven historic tartan patterns and turns them into modern quilts, sized from table runners to king. An eighth pattern, entitled "Amador" in honor of the foothill community Kathy calls home, is also included. Patterns are available for both beginner and expert quilters.
In your visit with Kathy, she can show you how to select fabric for modern tartan quilts. It’s all about value—lightness and darkness, rather than the color. In fact, she often selects fabrics that would be considered incompatible under normal circumstances. The math to do these quilts can be daunting. But Kathy has done ALL the math. All the quilter has to do is cut and sew—and put the pieces together in the right order. These quilts can be made fairly quickly.
Tartans are an important part of Scotland’s colorful history. Come and enjoy stories about the patterns, and experience a bit of Scotland’s culture. Kathy will be teaching classes in making these modern quilts in October at MiY Studio in Martell. Sign up sheets will be available.
